600: The Science Fair

The night before the science fair Frank could hardly sleep a wink. When he did sleep he dreamed of adoring crowds chanting his name, of Miss Chalmers presenting him with the golden science fair cup, and how his conquest at the Wilmerville Middle School Science Fair would mark the beginning of one of the most illustrious careers that science has ever known.

The Wilmerville Middle School Science Fair was a pretty low key event. There were no golden science fair cup, and there would be no adoring crowds. But such trivialities did not factor one iota into Frank’s dreams.

In the morning Frank wolfed down his cheerios, and grabbed his cardboard volcano and rain coat as he rushed towards the door.

He just knew he would win.

He didn’t win. Frank came in second. Stephanie had put together a complex chart explaining how people get runny noses, and for some reason the teachers liked it better than Frank’s volcano. Much to Frank’s surprise, there was no golden cup, but Miss Chalmers did give Stephanie a cool looking medal.

Frank stomped home through the rain puddles. He was disgusted. He would never enter a science fair project again.

Stephanie would go on to have one of the most illustrious careers science has ever known. The year before she had finished third.

To this day, Frank swears that science is not fair.
