598: Recycled Matches

I was looking down at my shopping list the other day, and I noticed something familiar.

Matches.

As an outdoor enthusiast, camper, outdoor enthusiast, griller and all around pyromaniac I find myself running through an awful lot of matches. In fact, only the previous week I had had matches on my shopping list. I was instantly struck by the pathetic waste which I was perpetrating as a result of my lifestyle choices. Could I do something better? Could I be a more responsible citizen? I was haunted by these questions, so I sat down to think.

After a while, I came up with a solution. It struck me out of the blue. It was so brilliant that I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before.

I would recycle my matches. It was responsible, Ecologically beneficial and elegant.

I went home. It was a beautiful evening. I decided to cook some steaks on the grill. I grabbed a charred match that was laying on the bottom of the grill, and started trying to light it. I hit against the back of the box several times, but it didn’t work.

What could I do? I thought about setting up a bunch of mirrors and that the rays of the sun would be concentrated and start a fire. It was a good idea, but it would take a lot of planning.

I sat down at the table to sketch something out.

That’s when my wife got home.

“Did you remember to get matches this time?” She asked.
